Artvigil medication belongs to a family of drugs called wakefulness-promoting agents or Psychoanaleptic. It can be habit-forming. The molecular formula and molecular weight of Armodafinil are C15H15NO2S and 273.35 respectively. Armodafinil has a long half-life than Modafinil, thus it can be more effective in managing excessive sleepiness associated with various sleep disorders. It is synthesized by the pharmaceutical giant Cephalon Inc. The mechanism by which Armodafinil acts is not clinically determined. It acts on that area of the brain, which regulates the sleep/wake cycle. Armodafinil has wake-promoting actions similar to that of amphetamine and methylphenidate. However, it has a different pharmacological profile than these sympathomimetic agents. It produces its effect by increasing the levels of substances that are required to remain awake. The onset of action and duration of effect are not clinically determined. It was approved by the FDA in June 2007.
