Active constituent of Generic Singulair is Montelukast, a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) or a leukotriene inhibitor permitted by the FDA as an anti-asthmatic and anti-allergic drug. Montelukast is an orally active compound that binds with high affinity and selectivity to the leukotriene receptor (as compared to other pharmacologically significant airway receptors like the prostanoid, cholinergic, or ?-adrenergic receptor). Montelukast inhibits physiologic actions of LTD4 at the CysLT1 receptor without any agonist activity.

According to indications

  • Asthma: Once daily in the evening for 12 months and older patients.
  • Acute prevention of EIB: One tablet at least 2 hours before exercise for 6 years and older patients.
  • Seasonal allergic rhinitis: Once daily for patients who are 2 years and older.
  • Perennial allergic rhinitis: Once daily for 6 months and older infants.

As per age:

15 years and older: 10 mg tablet once daily.

  • In case of an ongoing asthma attack avoid using generic Singulair. A suitable rescue medication should be used.
  • Decrease the dose of inhaled corticosteroid gradually when substituting it by Generic Singulair. Tersely switching Generic Singulair for inhaled or oral corticosteroids is not suggested. .
  • Neuropsychiatric events after administering Generic Singulair have been reported. Talk to your doctor if you have any history for neuropsychiatric events. .

Common side-effects that do not need any medical attention and tend to subside after one gets accustomed to the medicine are:

  • Stomach discomfort
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever or other flu signs
  • Cold symptoms like nasal congestion, sinus pain, cough, sore throat
  • Headache
  • Loss of bladder control in children

Serious side-effects include-

  • Variations in mood or behavior
  • Skin rash, staining, severe tingling, coldness, pain, muscle weakness
  • Ear pain, inflammation, or hotness
  • Severe skin reaction

What should be done in case of Overdose?

In case of accidental or intentional overdose, contact poison control center immediately.

What if a dose of Generic Singulair is missed?

In case of a missed dose, taken the dose as soon as you recall. If the time is near for the next dose, skip the missed dose and wait for the time to take the next scheduled dose. Doubling the dose to make up for missed dose can lead to unwanted side-effects due to overdose.
