Generic Zyban Information

  • Active Compound
  • Dosage
  • Precautions
  • Common Side Effects
  • Severe Side Effects
  • Additional Info

Generic Zyban contains Bupropion as active ingredient which belongs to the pharmacological class of anti-depressants. Bupropion is an atypical antidepressant chemically similar to diethylpropion, an appetite suppressant. The mechanism of the antidepressant effect of bupropion is not completely known, but bupropion inhibits reuptake of dopamine, noradrenaline, and serotonin in the central nervous system, is a non-competitive nicotine receptor antagonist, and at high levels constraints the firing of noradrenergic neurons in the locus ceruleus.

It is not clear which of these effects accounts for the antismoking activity of the drug, but inhibition of the reductions in levels of dopamine and noradrenaline levels in the central nervous system that occur in nicotine withdrawal is might be crucial. The antismoking effect of bupropion is not related to the antidepressant effect.

  • Available in the form of tablets of dose 150 mg.
  • Usual starting dose is 150 mg per day for first three days.
  • Dose may be increased gradually so as to reduce the risk of seizures. Dosing is started one week before quit day.
  • Dose escalation can be done to 300mg per day (in divided doses) after three days.
  • An interval of at least 8 hours should be maintained between two doses, if twice a day dose is followed.
  • Generic Zyban is usually used in combination with a nicotine transdermal system.
  • In case of mild liver and / or kidney dysfunction, dose reduction might be required.
  • Seizure risk is dose-related. Risk can be minimized by slowly growing the dose and limiting daily dose to 300 mg. Discontinue if seizure occurs.
