Generic prilosec Information

  • Additional Info

Generic Prilosec belongs to the drug family of proton pump inhibitors which are a class acidity reducing agents. It contains Omeprazole as an active component which belongs to a class of antisecretory drugs that destroy gastric acid secretion by precisely blocking an enzyme system at the acid secretory site of the parietal cells (cells that secrete gastric acid). This enzyme system is called as the acid (or proton) pump inside the stomach. Hindering this proton or acid pump does not permit the production and hence, additional secretion of gastric or stomach acid. Hence, omeprazole is called as a gastric acid-pump inhibitor where it blocks the final step of acid creation in the stomach.
